Liebster Award

This is Through an Aussie’s Eyes first official blogging recognition! Woo! I can hear the crowd going wild now!!

Before I go any further about the Liebster Award, I want to thank and apologise to the wonderful Angie Briggs from Feet Do Travel! The reason for my apology is that it has taken me so long to get this post up. Sorry Angie! But thank you so much for the nomination and all of the support you have provided me and other travel bloggers especially with the running of the Feet Do Travel Facebook Group which is designed to bring travel bloggers together and to inspire them to reach for the stars. I love it. It really has helped me so much.

I feel quite honoured to be nominated as I am still very new to blogging. Actually, I really am quite chuffed over this. The Liebster Award is a fantastic way to promote the up and coming travel bloggers from around the world and make them feel like they are part of a community.

So what are the rules?

11 Random Facts About Me:

Fact 1 – I started back at university this year. I am currently in my second semester of my Masters in International Security and study via correspondence at a university in Sydney. Only 12 more semesters to go!!

Fact 2 – I use to play cricket for my state (Australian Capital Territory) when I was a teenager. For all those who know cricket well, I am a leg spinner. For those who know a little bit, I bowl like Shane Warne – just nowhere near as good. For those who know nothing about cricket, I throw a ball with a straight arm at the batter. Actually, I am not sure if that helps at all?!

Fact 3 – I love having pets! I have a black cat named Midnight (Middy for short) and she is a standard jerk cat but I love her! My parents place has all of our childhood pets (2 cats, 1 dog, 1 budgie, 1 rabbit and 1 turtle) still which I visit a couple of times a week.

Fact 4 – I have one tattoo on my foot (it says Pura Vida) and 9 piercings.

Fact 5 – I have a massive badge collection!! Travelling gives me the opportunity to buy different badges from around the world.

Fact 6 – I completed a gap year with the Royal Australian Air Force when I was 19 years old.

Fact 7 – I really love 1950’s style dresses. They are just so gorgeous!!

Fact 8 – I am a sceptic when it comes to ghosts but I really love going on ghost tours.

Fact 9 –  I love watching giant animal movies with my brother and sister. Think Jaws, Lake Placid, Anaconda, Deep Blue Sea, The Shallows…. Lots of shark movies actually.

Fact 10 – I have been skydiving (Wollongong, Australia) and bungee jumping (Costa Rica).

Fact 11 – I love playing board games and cards – Monopoly, Tripoli, Dix It etc.

The 11 questions asked of me:

Question 1- How many years would you say you’ve been travelling and can you remember the first trip away and how it made you feel?

My first overseas trip was to Fiji with my family when I was 13 years old. I remember loving it and enjoying experiencing a different culture. My parents love to travel. Every year they would take us on a holiday up the east of Australia (from the Sunshine Coast down to the Mornington Peninsula).  I guess I can blame them for a lot of my travel addictions.

My next overseas trip didn’t take place until I was 20, so back in 2011, and I was off to Costa Rica. After my gap year with the Royal Australian Air Force I was all about taking opportunities. When I had a group called International Students Volunteers arrive at my university to talk about volunteering overseas; I was in. My brother and I headed off to Costa Rica later that year. I was there to do leatherback turtle conservation.

I remember lying on a beach in the middle of the night and just gazing up at the stars with likeminded people and thinking how amazing this opportunity was. I learnt a lot of life lessons on that trip; things like how to be thankful for what you’ve got and that life can be real harsh sometimes. The people I met in Costa Rica were by no means rich but they were happy. They had their family and that was all they needed. I haven’t ever looked back and have kept travelling.

Question 2 – When you are travelling/away from home, what do you miss most?

I miss my family and my pets the most. I am very family orientated and do spend a fair bit of time with them. I also miss having my pets around me all of the time. Although I only have the one cat at my house (well I sort of have two as my housemate has a very cute and sweet dog that always has a goofy smile on her face), she is always around me. It is also weird when I sleep somewhere else as I am use to having this black fluff ball walking over the top of me as I attempt to get some shut eye.

Question 3 – What is your guilty pleasure? This could be doing something, a TV programme or even music!

I wouldn’t say that I really have any guilty pleasures, although I do enjoy binge watching Netflix. I have a really demanding job, plus my blogging and uni so I do enjoy watching Netflix on the weekends while I clean the house between episodes. Actually right now I am watching Gossip Girl while typing this and cleaning the house between episodes. So that is my life in a nutshell when I am not travelling!

Question 4 – Have you ever seen or done anything so incredible that you become emotional?

I think one of the most amazing things I have seen would be the landscape over the Isle of Skye in Scotland. I travelled solo for my first time in June 2015 and I loved it.  I found it very liberating and that I could take on the world. I am not the fittest person around (working on it) but I attempted the gruelling hike up to the Old Man of Storr. If anyone has ever done this hike, than they would know what I am talking about. It is intense. I climbed it twice – once up to the Old Man of Storr and the other was up in to the Trotternish Ridge. They were both breathtaking walks and I was pretty proud of myself that I had actually made it that far and the views were beyond amazing.

Question 5 – As a blogger, what is the post that you are most proud of and why? Share the link here.

The post that I am most proud of is my blog on Manado, Indonesia called Magical Manado. I am most proud of it as this is the first time that I have been invited on a Media Famil and I was really thrown into the travel blogging world at that point. I met some amazing bloggers while explore parts of the world that I never imagined. You can read more here.

Question 6 – Have you ever had a fear that you confronted whilst travelling?

I can’t say that I have any real fears when it comes to travelling but I have had things that I have felt uneasy about. I felt very nervous towards travelling solo but I bit the bullet and did it.  I can be a bit socially awkward and am introverted so it taught me to get out of the shell and embrace life. Now that I have travelled solo it has taught me that I can tackle any situation that I need to!

Question 7 – Are you a mountain, ocean, animal or architecture person (or a mixture)?

I would say that I was a mixture of all of the above. I love animals and will see any type of landscape (manmade or natural) that shows me the story behind the country I am in or culture I am experiencing.

Question 8 – If you were stranded on a deserted island, what famous person would you want to be there with you and why?

Leonardo DiCaprio – hands down, no competition. Leonardo is one of the best actors the world has ever experienced (you can’t convince me otherwise) and I would love to have a chat with him face to face.  He would have such interesting stories to tell and I don’t think I would ever be bored.

Question 9 – Do you have ‘one thing you want to do before you die’ and if so, what is it?

I have a bucket list of things that I want to do (which is probably like most people) but one thing that I really want to do is to cage dive with great white sharks. This has always been at the top of my to do list. To me this is just the wildest thing I could possibly do. My present to my brother for his 21st is to take him cage diving so I am hoping that once he has finished his work training that we will head down to Port Lincoln in South Australia.

Question 10 – Do you have 1 luxury or unnecessary item that you must take with you on your travels? What is it any why?

I don’t really have any luxury items that I take with me but I do have a stone that is meant to protect me while I travel. My mum bought me a yellow jasper stone that I carry with me when I travel. It is a traveller’s assistant stone which helps the traveller stay grounded while the world is moving by.  It does bring me some comfort knowing that I always have this stone in my pack.

Question 11 – Is there one thing you need to buy as a souvenir or do you collect something specific on your travels?

Badges! I love collecting badges from around the world. I don’t know what it is about them but I like to wear them to brighten up my outfits. Some of the ones that I have bought from around the world is a hairy cow from Scotland, Big Ben from England and Disney (like 100 of these) from the USA. Even when I am travelling around Australia I try and keep an eye out for these. I can always find heaps in second hand stores.

Its a step…and what a step! I guess the key is to be honest and just be yourself. Many times in life we get new opportunities and we should take them on headlong, irrespective of the result. Its the experience that matters more.

Great post, and congratulations on your Liebster Award! 🙂
I travelled to the Isle of Skye for the first time a few weeks ago and absolutely loved it! Also did a big hike around the Old Man of Storr (not just up to the famous rocks but actually around the mountain – lost the path at some point and almost got lost… lol) – it was amazing! Scotland really is a beautiful place (and so is Australia!) x
