I have this gorgeous 12 year old border collie cross named Jack. He was a rescue dog that we gave a forever home to when he was 2 years old. He is one of the most beautiful dogs with the kindest hearts that I have ever met. For the past five years my sister and I (my mum has recently joined us) have been travelling for a day trip from our home in Canberra to Tomakin for a beach day.
Tomakin is a little seaside village on the south coast of New South Wales between the major towns of Batemans Bay and Moruya in Australia.
It is about a two and half hour drive down the winding roads to the south coast. We make this trip in January each year(yes it is very very hot) and we really look forward to it.
I don’t know about you guys but we have our traditions when we are road tripping. My sister and I meet at my parents place early in the morning to pick up the dog with his leash. Plus probably a couple of doggy treats to keep him happy.
Jack is a bit of an old man these day but that has not stopped his excitement. Basically the entire way from Canberra to Braidwood (just over an hour of driving) he is whinging with excitement. Braidwood is our halfway stop as they have one of the best bakeries in town. Come at me meat pie!
The next half to Tomakin is basically up and down the mountain range so it is really quite slow. Jack is a bit bored by this point and is asleep in the boot by this point. But when we come right down to Tomakin Beach then it is entirely worth it, especially when Jack realises where he is.
Tomakin Beach is stunning and is just so peaceful. This is one of the only dog friendly beaches on the south coast and you really will meet all different types of dogs enjoying their day out.
We spend the entire day lounging around on the beach and soaking up the salt water and sun. There aren’t really many waves so it is quite easy for the dogs to have a paddle out and throw a ball around.
Lunch is another delicious tradition for us. We pack up our gear and drive down the coastal road to Batemans Bay to the same fish and chip shop. Ordering some hot chips and burgers, we have a seat in the shade at the Bay and watch the waves roll in. Coast life is just so different to my everyday life.
The afternoon is spent soaking up the sun and relaxing in the water again. I just love watching Jack have a paddle and enjoying the water. He gets anxious if we go too far out. He tries to come out with us but freaks out when he can’t touch the sand so he circles back to the sand and runs up and down the sand barking at us attempting to get us to come in.
We also spend a fair bit of time exploring all of the rock pools on the edge of the beach. Jack isn’t so great at scrambling over the rocks. He tends to get too much speed up and can’t grip properly on the rocks! The poor puppy.
Our annual trip to Tomakin is one of my favourite road trips of all time. I love seeing how happy Jack is and being able to lounge around on the sand and the water is just bliss.
Do you have any annual trips you like to take?
